He's going to be a really good NFL player. He's a smaller Ben Coats type guy. If he gets drafted by the right team, I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from him in the years to come.

TE's can be such a big part of an offense presently and Gavin, in the right system, could be a star.

The next Tony Gonzales? Aw yeah. Oldie Out Let's not get to far ahead of ourselves ;D but in all seriousness best of luck to Gavin another Aztec in the NFL! Dan Ferrigno...his TE coach at sdsu for 2 years was quoted saying that escobar reminds him a lot of tony gonzales. Ferrigno was Gonzales's position coach in college. But, being compared to and actually become that are two different things. An NFL TE can have half the career that gonzales had and still make the hall of fame. Gavin will do just fine in the nfl.

Not really, he's a 3-4 rounder at a minimum now, unless he tanks at the combine. He's 6-5/6-6 250/255, great hands, great routes, can run, can block. He's a prototypical every down NFL TE. 2nd round. Bookmark it. NFL teams will be salivating to get a guy with his playmaking ability in the passing game. TE's like him are rare and can completely change the makeup of an offense. I agree that he is 2nd round caliber. And a huge steal. But he will not go that high. TE's don't usually go high, but when they do that means they have insane numbers and athleticism. Gavin will be a 3rd-4th rounder. Maybe even drop to the 5th. The draft if is a chess game, if you think a player is going to drop, regardless how much you want him, you pass on him and take the risk and hope that he is there next round. That's what usually happens to TE's. And on top of that, there are some pretty good TE's in this draft. I think with a decent combine, he will go 4th. With a very impressive combine, he will go early 3rd.

~ He's not ready ~ He really needs another year at the college level ~ It would be in his best interest to stay another year

Best of luck to Gavin. Hopefully he goes to a team that will utulize him well. ~ He's not ready ~ He really needs another year at the college level ~ It would be in his best interest to stay another year Always always the response of "fans" here. Ha! I laughed at some of these comments on the UT article: "He should come back, grow a bit more and put on more muscle mass to beable to block better....He has excellent hands and runs good routes but needs to beef it up some....But the $$$$$ are there and he is the kind of kid that I bet will finish his degree in the offseason.....Too bad, we are going to be good next year but there are other TEs that will fill that position." "Too bad...I think he is better served coming back, gaining more muscle mass and growth to be able to block the way they want a TE to block in the NFL....but $$$ $$$ $$$." "I like Escobar, he does some nice things, but he's not ready for the NFL. He doesn't do anything especially well. As an Aztecs/Chargers fan, regardless of our depth at TE, I would draft him no more than I would have drafted Ryan Lindley, which is to say, no thank you. Undrafted Free Agent? Sure, come out and try to make the team. But other than that? He needs more time to grow and polish his skills." and I was really confused about this one: "One small problem.....he can't catch. Yikes!"

People who make those types of comments think that a guy needs to be 100% ready and peaked at his abilities before going onto the next level lol. whatever his weaknesses may be, yah he could have worked on them if he stayed another year...but he also could work on those weaknesses in the nfl around better coaches and much stronger competition.

Says he runs a 4.78 right now..if he can drop that at least 1 second he will be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round for sure.
If he can't then he runs the risk of getting drafted in the 4th.

I would like to see him be the heir apparent for Antonio Gates.
Congrats! Joins SDSU NFL TE legacy.... Don Warren, Rob Awalt......Gavin Escobar.

I would like to see him be the heir apparent for Antonio Gates. I was thinking the same thing. Gates is running out of gas and the Chargers definitely need another big time playmaker at TE. Escobar would be the perfect choice. Drafting Escobar would also help create goodwill with the fans in San Diego. A great player who fills a need AND is a local college star. Win/Win.
