Lol, the devil is in the details. Looks like the MWC celebrating may have been a bit premature.

Or its just a poorly written article, because the contract had dropped by $4mm not to $4mm

Thompson could not be reached for comment Friday night, and an MW spokesman said he had no knowledge of a renegotiated TV deal. Assistant commissioner Javan Hedlund did confirm that Thompson had been in New York discussing a renegotiated deal with CBS-Sports Network before traveling Friday to Las Vegas for Saturday’s Las Vegas Bowl game between Boise State and Washington.
This seems to knock out the report that hair was with Kustra this week and today in particular.

It seems to be a garbage figure.
The article claims the payout dropped to $4mm "when" the mtn was dropped. The article also claims that at "the start of the 2012 season" Thompson said the payout was $400,000 per team.
All reports at the beginning of the 2012 season and when The MTN was dropped say the contract dropped by $4mm to a total payout of $8mm divided by 10 teams.
Bad journalism.

The $4 million figure was before the new deal. They will be able to get more by bidding out additional games to up to two new networks moving forward. However, I have a hard time believing this will bring in that much more money considering CBS still retains the rights to two best games every week. They will have a hard time getting back to the level back in the MTN days. Boise must be really doubting Aresco's ability to get a good TV deal if they are seriously considering going back to the MWC.

I guess that makes it really really bad reporting.

With Utah State and SJSU joining, if Boise comes back (without you) it will be 11 football/10 full members. While the mw can earn more money by bidding out games, how much value do USU and San Jose add going forward - considering that both programs just lost the coaches who built them up?

Frankly, nothing in this or the Dodd report screams to me this is different than the current deal, of note:
resell the broadcast rights of games not selected for telecast by CBS-Sports Network and its partner networks to help recoup some of the revenue lost when The mtn. shut down in May.
Who are their partner networks? Current deal calls for them to repackage games to a network with over x (think it's 70m) subscribers, that has been NBC cable (previously versus). So, do those game count too? Those two picked all but 1 boise game, and half or more of sdsu, afa, unr and fresno games. Are root and time warner sports net partner networks or are those the games they are talking about being able to sell.
'to recoup some of the revenue...' so does that mean whatever those left over games equal will chip into the money lost, certainly doesn't seem to be on top of it.
How is this not just a return to the old deal and the ledger has to work to allow them to get back to that 12 mil figure?
I think this is a big farce of being a new deal, but I also think Boise is still going back because they are going to let boise cut their own deal.

Maybe the plan is to give the entire $4 million to Boise? The others can hope that momma bear will produce enough milk for them to live off her teats? (or droppings?)

ESPN is going to give them the BYU deal, the only winners will be the loser schools like WYO, CSU and the others that were going to be left behind.

If CBS is giving up their rights to sell MWC games don't you think that means they can't make money selling them to others? MWC may be able to by going direct, but I assure you it is chump change. Being the large corporation that CBS is, they have to operate on big profits from their investments, in this case MWC games.
Boise State isn't dumb. The money in the MWC isn't there. They will see what Aresco can come up with before making any decision.

My suspicion is that Boise---or a third party---is promoting this rumor to help push Aresco to a conclusion to the negotiations sooner, rather than late.
