If they don't do anything or sign a few over the hill mediocre players, I think Padre Fans deserve to be a little miffed.
What does this team need?
Another power bat in the OF?
Better SS?
More injury resistant SP's?
Who would on this team be the best trade bait?

Dude, I've been more than a "little miffed" for a long time. We were promised a commitment to a winning team with the new ballpark - and what we've gotten is a joke.

More injury resistant SP's? Who would on this team be the best trade bait? I think the team really likes the starting 8 they can place on the field. They need 2 more starters. They signed Jason Marquis and now only need one more. In addition, I would like them to re-sign Stauffer. He is a good swing man if healthy. Hopefully that is the case. 3B, LF, CF, 1B, and C are set. The platton in RF of Donorifa and Venable is above average. That leaves SS and 2B. The Padres are going to try Forsythe at SS and Gyorko at 2B. Until that plays out, there won't be any movement there. That leaves only pitching to improve at this point. |

That is going to be a poor defensive infield. Hopefully the bats will make up for it. That is the fear although I believe they are more optimistic about it then they were in August. The Padres have a long spring training that can determine whether or not the defense is a problem. I am a big fan of defense. I think it is more important than most do. I hope they are OK defensively because I belive they will both be well above average offensively. |

Pads need a SS but the market for SSs is bad this offseason. They want to find a way to get Gyorko on the field and I think they want to try that at 2B.

Do you really think this lineup stands a chance to make the playoffs in 2013 (no matter how watered down they've become)? Yes. That lineup produced more runs last year than most playoff teams. Post All-Star game, when that lineup without Gyorko was finally together, they scored 4.61 runs per game. St Louis (4.46), Cincinnati (4.04), and Atlanta (4.01) all scored less. That is not even taking into consideration the Padres ball park which is a major pitcher's park. If you adjust for the DH (.9473), the Padres also scored more than Detroit, Baltimore, and Texas. The Padres scored .22 runs a game less than the Yankees per game using the DH adjustment. The starting 8 is fine. |

Be thankful we didn't sign Blanton. The guy is an innings eater, he'll give you 25 to 30 starts a year but he's mediocre. 2 years, $15M for a guy who'll give you a 4.75 ERA and 1.30 WHIP? I would like to think Byrnes can find a guy with those numbers and not overpay him like the Angels did. I do like Haren, but Ken Rosenthal reports he has issues with his hip AND back, hence the 1-year deal he got, and his poor numbers last year. I wouldn't have minded him on a 1 year shot, but Washington chose to pay him $13M. |

It was the back problem last year that made him struggle; and it is the back problem that should scare teams off of paying him $13M. That's a big bet that he'll be better than last year. Although they don't need him to do much with Stras/Gio/Zimmerman/Detweiler already in place. They are taking a flyer on a guy that could help a WS caliber team. The Padres aren't there yet, and gambling $13M on the health of Dan Haren isn't the way to get there. |
