Never underestimate the greed of people with a lot of money to do what is in the best interests of their own pocket rather than the desire of the people who want to see the best in the world compete against each other AND the players who want to experience the Olympics as many times as possible in their lives while at the top of their games.
"The Olympics are a huge for-profit endeavor," Dallas owner Mark Cuban told Yahoo! Sports on Sunday. "It makes no sense that NBA owners subsidize it."
The desire to make the World Cup of Basketball something that NBA owners can capitalize on is similar to the "club vs. country" debate in international (primarily European soccer).
What the NBA needs to understand is that there is room for both the Olympics and the World Cup just as there is room in European soccer for the World Cup and the Euro Championships.

Under the proposed scenario and if they made it, Kawhi and Jamaal would not be able to experience the Olympics. That is LAME.
The Olympics are for the best in the world to compete regardless of economics or politics and for fans to come together to enjoy it.

The Olympics are for the best in the world to compete regardless of economics or politics and for fans to come together to enjoy it. The Olympics are for the IOC to make a bunch of money and be big shots. It's why FIFA and the clubs only send under 23s and it's why Cuban and Stern will diminish the Olympic product and try to pocket the money with a world cup no one will give a flying F about

If Jamaal will be on the team that means that there are plenty of injuries to wing on USA team, he will be a nice bench scorer in the NBA but that is his ceiling, a volume scorer off the bench that can also defend.

The NBA gets ripped off with how it is run right now, it is amazing that they have let this go on for 20 years, Cuban knows what he is talking about, they have every right to get money off of their product.

The game of basketball does not BELONG to the NBA. They are trying to create a worldwide monopoly of the game and it will turn the rest of the world off if it is sold, marketed, profited from and governed that way by the NBA. Lithuania put USA to the test today and it was an exciting game to watch. USA is the best in basketball and we should send our best to prove it. It would be like the Greeks not sending Hercules. Denying players the chance to have an Olympic experience, the greatest athletic competition in the world, is pure greed and will not be in the best interests of growing the game. Build the World Cup of Basketball into something with the magic and history of winning a medal for your country and then we can talk. Still, while doing that, there is room to do both competitions.

The olympics is the number 1 reason they started selling butt loads of jerseys in the rest of the world - no dream team, this sport is still mostly american. But, Stern is going to do whatever Cuban tells him re: money in the owner's pockets, and so they are going to start a world cup that no major players will attend and no one will give a flying F about, have under 23s in the olympics so that becomes marginalized.

The NBA licenses the rights to USA Basketball products, so they have already been making money off of the jerseys, trading cards, promotional products, etc. all of these years.
Therefore, we are just talking about greed and wanting to make money off of ticket sales and t.v. rights.
Olympics and World Cup of Basketball can live together like Euro Championships and World Cup exist along with annual UEFA Champions League in soccer.

The game of basketball does not BELONG to the NBA. Their players do. Players belong to the NBA Player's Association.

Players belong to the NBA Player's Association. Nice try, but I believe the owners are paying the players.

Players belong to the NBA Player's Association. Nice try, but I believe the owners are paying the players. You have an interesting view on labor. Their rights to play in the NBA may belong to a specific team and subsequently the NBA, but that does not mean that the player belongs to them.
