Houston Street rehabbing at the Lake. Back on the active roster today. Cool. He was missed.

I don't expect Volquez to do as well as Latos but I do expect Street to do better than Bell. Latos 2 starts, 5.59 ERA Volquez 2 starts, 3.00 ERA Bell 13.5 ERA, 0 Saves, 1 BS Street 0.0 ERA, 1 save, 0 BS Other players of note: Harang 6.23 ERA I will update this every once in a while. It looks like the Padres dodged a bullet letting Bell walk. Street is all-star quality and Bell is making Marlins cry. Bell 19 Saves 6 Blown Saves 6.75 ERA 2-5 Street 13 Saves 0 Blown Saves 1.13 ERA 2-0 Latos 4.13 ERA 7-2 Volquez3.52 ERA 5-7 Harang3.51 6-5

Bill, you cite all these comparative statistics as though the Padres' front office were a bunch of magicians. Why is the team one of the worst in baseball? This year or over that last 10? I don't there is a case for "worst in baseball" over the last ten so I'll assume you mean this year. The answer is bets that didn't pan out and a ridiculous rash of injuries. There have been, what, 14 starting pitchers already this year? I think the record for most in a year is right around 20. I would wager that 10/year is slightly above average. But also some bad decisions like Bartlett and Hudson as well as thinking that Hundley's hitting last season was more than an aberration. I understand that you are bagging on Bill because he is the ultimate Padres optimist. But still, at least in this case, the team being poor doesn't mean that the roster decisions at pitcher were poor ones.

Bill, I hope you know that I'm just having fun with you, never with the intent to offend. If the team had more fans like you (assuming you still buy tickets) maybe they'd get me back out there. As for these trades... ---I had no problem with the Latos trade as the guy is insane. Kinda like Gary Sheffield. Plus it would appear on the surface as though we got a good haul for him. ---The Peavy trade is another matter. Knowing that his pitching motion is so violent, I could understand shopping him but I also felt (and feel) that this and so many other moves are dictated by $ and little else. No offense taken. I am a half season ticket holder. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. The real Peavy question is about the best way to use $18 million. If the Padres had an extra $18M a year to spend would signing Peavy to a long term contract be the best use? Fans usually ignore that question. The trade was Richard who is still pitching for the Padres and 1 1/2 years of Peavy, which is long over. That trade was a huge win for the Padres.

The real Peavy question is about the best way to use $18 million. That wouldn't bother me either IF the owners didn't consider lining their pockets to be the "best way" to use player payroll. Divorce has forced the sale of many a business. Baseball is no different.
