You absolutely offer January if he would accept. Would love to see January and Jamaal filling the lanes on a break... HOLY $HIT!

There's no need to offer this guy right now. He can't sign until the Spring. All he needs to know is that he has an offer as soon as the two guys in front of him with offers say no. Sounds like UTEP is a fall back option.

Under normal circumstances we would be all over a recruit like January; however, with only 2 scholarships left for next year and Pelle, Shepherd & Johnson still on our radar, we will most likely wait for their decisions first.
If we land Johnson later this week, I could see the coaches going to Pelle and Shepherd and asking for a decision right away, if they are still uncommitted, go ahead and grab January. Like SDSU2000 points out, it makes sense to wait until spring signing period.

Then stop recruiting Shep, and put our effort towards 2013 recruits.

Isn't the general sentiment that... Sheppard is waiting until the Spring... for a better offer to come along?
I'd much rather sign a kid that WANTS to be here... as opposed to being someone's backup plan.
January can flat out score from anywhere on the court. I would sign him and forget about Sheppard. Doesn't Shep want to play point guard anyways?
Same story with Pelle... either give us a verbal or sign Johnson (assuming Johnson chooses State).
January and Johnson are two VERY good athletes at 6'7" and 6'9". And with Polee and O'Brien, our frontcourt is just fine next year along with Spencer in the middle.

It is now a no lose proposition with Johnson on board. The team should feel comfortable with any of Shepard, Pelle or January and could even feel fine with holding the schollie in case a transfer comes along next season. Adding any of the three just makes the team even more deadly in the frontcourt.

We could still use another big man, but Stephens, O'Brien, Spencer, Williams and Johnson as a group is pretty strong as is - even better if Polee can play the 4 too a bit! Great time to be an Aztec fan!

Get use to it, SDSU will get UNLV's leftovers. Who would you play for: A young intelligent, fast break style coach Rice or an old washed up Fish. Heath Schroyer realized that Last season's national coach of the year with mentions as a candidate for this year. Not sure what Schroyer has to do with this conversation. Oh that's right, you're a troll.

An exerpt from the scout message board- mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=75&f=1043&t=8562808*There are some emerging 2012 high school basketball players in the Los Angeles area that are still unsigned but could end up highly coveted. Taft small forward Anthony January was committed to UTEP but says he's looking at others, and showing the most interest in him right now are San Diego State and UNLV. January is making progress towards qualifying and has improved his approach to the game at Taft. Should he qualify, high majors will likely be all over him. Offer him, ge a verbal, stay on top of him grades wise, before the high majors come.

No question that UNLV and SDSU are THE programs on the west coast right now. It's all good as far as I'm concerned with UNLV. There's plenty of talent to go around. Just wish/hope that somehow this healthy rivalry can be continued in some way past next season.

Rivalries only work if both teams are at their VERY best. 20 years from now... no one will remember a 20 point blowout to an outclassed team. But put two top 15 teams on the court to battle it out... year in and year out... and you will get excitement and memories to last a lifetime!

I defer to Fisher on all cases. obviously.
But in my opinion I don't understand why we would take this guy when we already have Shrigley, Jamal, Polee, Chase, and Rahon.

There is growing sentiment that January will end up in Sheppard's 'class'. Any class of 2012 signee will only overlap with Chase/Rahon for one year (which is ideal). And quite frankly... I wouldn't see Sheppard sticking around for too long. And who knows if Jamaal will stick around after this/next year? Shrigley and January at the 2 and 3... as upperclassmen... would be unreal.

Anthony January's game is nice... as far as all-around game is concerned, he would be like a 6'7" version of Chase Tapley. Jumper is very nice, solid ball skills, excellent attacker, and a solid defender. He was one of the most impressive players I saw at the TP tourney.
At 6'7"-6'8", he would be the purest SF we have had here really...He is a very versatile and athletic player with a very nice looking handle and jumper. Excellent rebounder and shot blocker as well.
To Tec's point though, we definitely do not need a SF. While there is not a true SF on the roster, we have plenty of talent on the Wing in general, and in Fisher's system, and in college hoops in general, you can be successful with multiple players 6'4" to 6'8".
I would prefer Pelle over January or Shepard at this point... I think he would be able to play and dominate defensively immediately - more that both Spencer and Johnson. At the same time, I would be thrilled to add January or Shepard to the mix as well.

For what its worth... the dude who is connected with the Hamilton brothers (@mgrads on twitter) was here in SD watching the games at Lincoln last weekend. He thinks January is the real deal as well. He tweeted that January "will be a lottery pick. U cant teach what he has. Has at least 17 rebounds, on the low end"

If you look at the three: Shepard, Pelle and January, 2 of the 3 are academic risks. I would put the order of priority: Shepard, January, and then Pelle. If they can get either L. Franklin or A. Williams to walk-on status then we could get 2 of the 3. I would still like Shepard and January over Pelle. I just think Pelle is too much of an academic risk. As I have been reading, January is on the rise on recruiting boards [so was Leonard]. I would go to Shepard and ask for a yeah or nay and tell January it is his if Shepard does not come to SDSU.

Is it that simple to get aid agreements with LBF and Alec, and would they take it? Or would them transferring out be more viable?

I certainly wouldn't ask LBF or Alec to give up their scholarships... and I wouldn't ask them to transfer out either. At the end of the day, it's a matter of principle/integrity. We signed both of these guys with the best of intentions, and to-date it just hasn't panned out like we hoped it would. Nevertheless, they are part of the Aztec family. Equally important... you can't have a roster 12/13/14 deep with EVERY player expecting to be in the starting lineup (or playing serious minutes). It just wouldn't work. We need guys who will bust it in practice even though they know they may not see the court come gametime. I'm still of the opinion that you take the first guy to verbal or put his name on the dotted line (I'm not familiar with when the late signing period begins)... whether that's January, Sheppard or Pelle. In a perfect world, if their were no questions about qualifying (academically) or sticking around... I'd certainly prefer Pelle. But we all know we don't live in a perfect world. It's funny to think.... a few years ago... that one day we'd be in a position to turn down a top 150 (and rising) player like January... with the hopes of signing a Pelle or Sheppard.
