Not re-signing Sproles was the right move. He was coming off a subpar season and his contract wasn't worth his value. Norv can't do anything right. Can't manage a game (calling a timeout to use a challenge is just beyond idiotic) and he can't motivate the players. His playcalling has been horrendous for the past few games. A.J. is gone within a year or two, either way. He has stated repeatedly he intends to leave before 2014.

He hired Norv hoping he'd have a little more than sway on game day. The problem is AJ. by the way, Sproles is flourishing in New Orleans. Norv... phew. The guys has lost the team. its over for him. that said, I really want to see AJ kicked to the curb. his arrogant pompous ass has got to go.

Sproles can flourish all he wants in New Orleans. He was paid over 7 million dollars his last season here and he was a virtual non-factor. Glad he found success elsewhere. The problem is we need to activate Jordan Todman. Guy is very talented, but is never active. Another mindboggling decision by the coach who can't coach. Manusky, Turner and AJ can all go.

Not re-signing Sproles was the right move. He was coming off a subpar season and his contract wasn't worth his value. But like the Jamal Williams situation he failed to replace a top notch player with a player of equal talent. There was a noticeable talent dropoff. And those aren't the only cases. This has been going on for 4 or 5 years now. A.J. lets a great player go and replaces him with a warm body. Position by position the talent level on this team has dwindled by attrition. That's ALL on A.J. Smith. Norv is a mediocre head coach at best, in over his head at worst. (Calling Chuck Long...) He's A.J.'s yes man. He's a guy who doesn't make waves for the GM, and that's the main reason he got the job. Not soon enough. The team will be in shambles by then if A.J. is still here - regardless of who the head coach is.

Ryan, Sproles's last season is San Diego was rather productive. He averaged 5.3 YPC and was useful is the passing game, catching 60 passes. It was his 2009 (3.7 YPC) that was subpar. sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7306That being said, I agree that letting him walk hasn't been our problem. Ryan Mathews is a very talented back, with good hands. His problem has been his health issues, and fumbling. His future looks bright, and there wasn't room on the payroll for him, Sproles, and Tolbert. I would argue that running back is not a concern for San Diego right now. Sproles went to an offense that suits him perfectly...even still he is only averaging about 80 yards a game combined rushing & receiving (though his averages are high). He's a useful back, particularly in the passing game. He's not a guy you want to be paying $7M a season to, though I think highly of him. AJ seems to repeatedly draft defensive players that just don't impress me. English, garbage. Cason, mediocre and recently benched. Butler? Decent. In my humble opinion, AJ Smith needs to go because not only has his recent history been crap, he can not be trusted to hire the right coach for the job. There is a great likelihood he would move to hire another Yes Man who will not create any waves for him. He is an egotistical control-freak and I highly doubt he would hire a strong personality to be his coach. I don't think Norv is to blame for this season. The personnel isn't what it was. You don't have Jamal Williams and tenacious linebackers taking away the run from you. You don't have a healthy Merriman and Shaun Phillips wreaking havoc on 3rd downs. Antonio Gates is about 70% of what he was even 3 years ago, and our O-line is piss poor. And spare me last years defensive rankings. If you look at advanced stats, there's more to that. You could argue that atrocious special teams kept the defense off the field often, for starters. Last years special teams was a painful nightmare of a unit. The D was "solid", but it didnt inspire confidence to me like it did several years ago, when NOBODY could run off of them. The Bears got a 3rd down conversion whenever they wanted it last week. So I don't necessarily blame Norv directly for our record. I just don't think he is a good head coach. At all. He has a lengthy body of work to examine, and nobody can say he is a winner. A strong leader of men. Anything besides a bright offensive mind, who is best suited as an Offensive Coordinator. He needs to go. Yesterday. 8. 107-114. That's Norv Turner's record in 14 seasons as an NFL head coach. If he wants a 15th, he can't be losing to Tim Tebow Sunday at home. Or if he is okay with eating $12M, because that's what it will cost to fire them both.

You might be right, Ryan. But, I'll say this, I haven't seen New Orleans run Sproles up the middle, inside the 5 yard, again and again and again, ad nauseam, like Norv did last year, and for only 1 TD out of too many attempts. Norv forgot how to utilize Sproles last year in my opinion. Sproles is kicking butt in the down easy.

just get AJ out of here already. The guy has dismantled a once great Charger team, and made it this pile of garbage that we see now. what a joke.

Norv is terrible. He is the most conservative coach and instills zero confidence in his team

The talent level of this team is just a small fraction of what it was 5 years ago. That is ALL on A.J. Smith. So is the hiring of Norv Turner, who has consistently had his teams underprepared and undisciplined. He is a terrible game manager, and when he is also head coach his play calling as an offensive coordinator is poor. They both must go. This cannot go on. This has become a farce.

If Spanos has even an inkling of how to grab a clue, this abortion of a "game" today should provide it.
FIRE TURDNER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly, this is what we all predicted when Norv was hired as head coach. The slow unraveling of a once talent laden team. I be AJ feels like a total schmuck. Looks like you dont have to know very much to be a GM if you got guys like AJ calling the shots.

I'm not surprised this team sucks this bad this season, we fans know Turner cant coach, lead or motive his teams, there's a reason he got fired twice before coming here.. seems like the tema has adopted the personality of the head coach.. lazy, unmotived, unprepared, no passion, just soft...
And aj Smith.. this guy has not drafted well since Buddy Nix left, his 1st round picks have been bad since he fired marty... 2007- buster davis .. garbage 2008 - antoine cason ..scrub 2009 - larry english .... lol

You have absolutely no clue as to what you're talking about. There are so many problems with the above statement that it's not even worth getting into. Suffice it to say that you're dead wrong on ALL accounts. And aj Smith.. this guy has not drafted well since Buddy Nix left, his 1st round picks have been bad since he fired marty... 2007- buster davis .. garbage 2008 - antoine cason ..scrub 2009 - larry english .... lol Agree here, and he's let this become the oldest roster in the NFL. His O-line choices of late aren't any better. Really, Jeromy Clary and Louis Vasquez? And no viable backup for Marcus McNeil, a player they KNEW had serious neck problems when they drafted him, and thus knew would be injury prone? I mean, I love Dombrowski as much as the next Aztec, and he's generally done a yeoman's job, but he's a guard, not a tackle, and is struggling playing out of position. That's all on AJ, not Norv.

He's dead RIGHT on all accounts regarding to Norv. The team is soft, the extreme uptick in injuries this year is not a coincidence. Team needs a new start. If there's truth to the Andy Reid rumors, that'd be a huge upgrade.

If there's truth to the Andy Reid rumors, that'd be a huge upgrade. Andy Reid might be a good choice for us, but, I think his coaching acumen took a major hit when Jim Johnson left his DC spot do to his failing health. Once Johnson departed that defense took a serious nose dive. Hence Reid's coaching taking a hit. We've had one sided wonders with the likes of Norv. Its time for a fire breathing defensive wonder to come in and take control of our defense. A decent to good OC can work with our offense and average 25-30 points a game. It's our defense and overall team attitude, again in my opinion, that needs the overhaul.

I've pushed for Cowher since about....2006, roughly. The problem with hiring a new coach is you'd likely have to fire AJ as well (which is a distinct possibility) because any coach would likely want a voice in personnel matters.
