Sorry, but Ryan was erratic last year as well. Love the kid, and he *IS* definitely a "winner" (someone who motivates his teammates to play better than their collective ability), but Ryan's career completion % tells the story. career completion %? I haven't charted it so I'm guessing that attempst to go farther than 20 yards is a big part of that % - most QBs' with high % feast off the short patterns... Ryan hasn't had a season completion % north of .58 yet in any of his 4 seasons -- and 60% is a pretty low bar for measuring elite college QBs. Not trying to bash the kid, far from it, but reality is that Ryan fails to complete a fair number of simple throws every game. You can blame some of that on drops this season, but what about last season when he had VB & DS, on top of pretty much the same TEs and Ronnie F*&^%#@ Hillman. It's not a matter of long-yardage attempts. Actually, I think Ryan throws a fantastic deep ball -- it's the short & medium "touch throws" that cause him some problems.

I never questioned Michigan being good, the problem was the play of our QB. Michigan is a good team with an outstanding runningback who happens to be their QB. If our QB would have managed to play mediocre we would have been there till the end, however, that was not the case. WE have a good team, a great running back, and a pretty good defense. We should be pretty darn good this year in conference. If we ran the ball more, instead of expecting greatness from a flighty QB, we should steamroll our conference. GO AZTECS!!! OK fine, RL had a poor game, but when you are laying blame, please include Ronnie and the coaching staff.

Um, because certain people on here who never played football beyond Pop Warner think are geniuses when it comes to coaching? Or, more to the point, have spent years on their couches watching football games with their drunken buddies claiming they could do it better. =Bob +1 Kinda like the idiots that claim Norv calls a bad O game for the Chargers.

The proof is in the pudding as far as his performance in big games go, as well as in his stats in said games. I may be a little heavy handed towards his performance, or lack-there-of, in big games, but who cares? My opinion is just that, just one persons thoughts collected through observation and analysis. I do not claim to know the game of football better than anyone else on this board, actually, I'm sure my knowledge of the game lies within the center of the curve. That said, I am a huge Aztec fan, but that won't stop me from being critical of the players who play for our team if they fail to perform.

Completion percentage is an overrated stat.

Completion percentage is an overrated stat. yeah, within a certain context every stat is overrated. If a guy throws/runs for tons of yards in a losing cause, what do his stats count for besides personal recognition? There are tons of players who had great stats but never won when it mattered most. There are guys with average stats that did what it took to win. Personally, I'm sick of guys with inflated stats that don't do $#!+ in big games.

You said he doesn't show up in big games. 276 2TD 0INT vs Navy 538 4TD 3INT vs Utah 262 2TD 2INT vs TCU 365 3TD 2INT vs Wyoming prove otherwise. Lindley didn't cost us the Utah/TCU games just like he didn't cost us the Michigan game. They were team efforts...

Completion percentage is an overrated stat. Maybe so, but accuracy isn't an overrated attribute. Lindley's accuracy issues are exaggerated on here by many, but it is something that needs work, especially if he intends to make it in the pros. Just my $.02. Bill Walsh, I am not.

You can think whatever it is you wish on my stance towards Lindley...The proof is in the pudding as far as his performance in big games go, as well as in his stats in said games. Pods, I personally wouldn't have a problem with your posts if the majority said something like "i wish lindley would play better in big games." The problem comes when you lay the blame for entire games solely at Ryan's feet. That is absurd. Look at your quotes: "Lindley is why we lost that game." "If we ran the ball more, instead of expecting greatness from a flighty QB, we should steamroll our conference. " "IMO, the less Lindley the better. WE need to run the ball more." "Lindley sometimes can make what should be easy passes look extremely difficult" "to win Lindley will have to be at his best. that means he will have to complete at least 45% of his passes." "Lindley would have a tough time hitting the broad side of a barn if it was moving." Now let's go back and look at the UM game. Who won the battle: UM DL or SDSU OL?..UM Who won the battle: UM OL or SDSU DL?..UM Who called 3 Hillman runs to start the game 3 and out? Ludwig and Pods Who fumbled in UM territory on the 2nd possession? Hillman Who had a hold negating a reception to the UM 12? Young. Who said the defense in the first half was embarrassing? CRL Who had a hold first play of 3Q taking ball out of UM side? ENasty Who had ball sail thru hands for 1st down on UM 30? Lockett Who fumbled a 1st down on UM 16? Hillman Who missed a PI call on Lockett that would be 1st on UM25? Damn Ref Who again had ball thru hands for 1st down on UM17? Lockett At this point there was 12:30 left in the 4th and state is down 14 points. There’s plenty of opportunity there. Or as CRL himself said of Lindley...“there's a whole bunch of other guys that didn't play very well either.” So most of us here blame the team for the loss (personally i excuse parker) and CRL blames everyone including himself. So Pods I ask...would you like to change your final answer of "Lindley is why we lost that game."

Can't argue with this at all. I can. Ryan has been erratic, but if you don't at least partially blame the receivers then you're clueless. Easy to blame someone when you're not in the huddle. Last year, with two great WR's, he completed 58% of his passes. He didn't forget how to play QB since then. No, he has not been great, but he's had a lot of balls dropped and I'm betting the routes aren't as good this year either. Plus, our group of TE's has not lived up to their billing. The blame can be spread. I would like to argue this as well. There is, indeed, blame to go around. We spotted Michigan 21 points in the 1st half, when, by his own admission, Rocky was too aggressive w/ his blitzing. When Robinson broke thru the line of scrimmage, no one was home because they were all blitzing. When Rocky went to more of a contain scheme on defense in the 2nd half, they only scored 7 pts. We tied them in the 2nd half.! Michigan had significantly fewer yards in the 2nd half. It seems when our TEs don't do well, it's the defense taking them out of the passing game. It happened in the Army game. That's why the WRs did so well then. We lost to Michigan for a combination of reasons.

OK fine, RL had a poor game, but when you are laying blame, please include Ronnie and the coaching staff. Collectively the OL had a pretty piss poor game, too. Oh, and another reason we struggled in this game: we did not match up well against their corn fed lineman on both sides of the ball. We can hardly match Michigan, yet, in recruiting lineman. It is Michigan, after all!

Hoke is a good coach who somehow seems to attract very good assistants. The DC was the DC for the Ravens in the NFL. They were horrible last year on defense. They looked pretty bad against ND, but it looks like they are getting better every week.
And we don't need to run the ball more, we need to pass more but especially be more unpredictable early in the game. Borges was a very good OC. I think we miss him. I was very high on Rocky Long, but am having some doubts now. The next few games will tell us a lot. We should win 8-9 games.
As far as Lindlely goes, plus 1 to Ninjabynight's comments.

The proof would also be in the pudding if SDSU was as storied a program as Michigan and was capable of bringing in the best QBs on the Left Coast. =Bob

I've repeatedly criticized Ryan's ability to make touch passes at short & medium length. The kid's got a cannon arm, but struggles at times when throwing the changeup. If that's bashing him to you, fine. I see that as pointing out a relevant weakness in his game that he's not made any huge improvement in over his career. Doesn't make him a bad kid, ineffective QB, etc. Just means that to be a starting QB in the NFL, that's the biggest chink in his armor... and at the college level a good opposing defense can scheme against that weakness and make him look more inconsistent that he otherwise really is. And granted, this is just my opinionated B.S. since I am not especially qualified to make these judgements with any authority. But that doesn't stop anyone else here, so.........

Ok, enough with the QB talk, and critique. Getting back to the subject, yes Michigan is for real. I think we learned that about two weeks ago.
But, let me qualify that. Michigan played their first 5 games at home. This Saturday they finally venture out to play Northwestern on the road. Now, we will see just how good they really are. I wish we had a schedule like that, man.
