Not completely different. No, it is. Probably because they haven't played a team coached by their close friend. Rocky wasn't just talking about some guy he worked with for a few years. Brady and Rocky are friends outside of football. The cards are stacked yes but if an MW team doesn't make it to the Final Four, they just weren't good enough. If an MW team doesn't make it to the NC game, it's because the cards were stacked against them, not because they weren't good enough. If you can't see the difference, I can't help you...

In response to the open letter
I just want to say this to the Aztec Players ..and I think this says it all...to paraphrase Vince Lombardi and I can see a coach like Rocky telling his players something like this.
“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up after.”
Amen
Now Let's get ready to BEAT TCU!!
The Past is now Past!! Let's move along everyone.

Rocky has rerpeatedly said that it would take him four full classes of recruits to completely makeover the team in his image. I think, among other things, he's talking about toughness and having his players reflect the same steel that girds him. I think Steveem makes a good point and I don't think Rocky would disagree.

All 68 teams that make the NCAA tourney have a "chance" to win it. Completely different for college football. Ask Utah, BSU and last year's TCU team.

Once Hoke took the Michigan job there was speculation both schools would find somebody else to play. That the game was #1 on the radar of so many fans over the last nine months and is still a big deal controversy here three days after it ended suggest that would have been a good idea.

Completely different situations. We could go undefeated and not even sniff the NC game in football. Brady could have his team in the NC game THIS year if they go undefeated. (I don't think they will) Not completely different. I don't think you'll ever hear the Boise St. coach saying that someone other than his blue-turf monstrosity should with the NC. Nor will you hear the Purple Toads say otherwise. Additionally, the MGC is really in the same boat in bball. When was the last time a MGC team even made it to the Final Four. Exactly. Never. The cards are stacked against us in bball, too. But that doesn't stop Fish from setting the bar high. Current MWC teams going back about 15 years, ...? UNLV made it to the final four in '87 and '91. Former MWC school, Utah, was there in '98. Yeah, you can make the argument that they were all WAC teams, but how different was the WAC in the early 90's from the MWC in the early 2000's?

Galland wasn't just fighting Spitfires, Steve. Might want to look it up.

That is, Steve, unless you are of the opinion that the Poles and the French flew Spitfires. Well, I guess we could re-write history.

Oh, and by the way, Steve, Galland shot down 104 planes. No pilot in history has over 400 victories, but why let facts stand in the way of a fun fantasy.

Steve has, over the years, earned the respect of those who have posted over the years. Enjoy his take. He always has something thought provoking to say and I enjoy his posts. I have a take that is about a 180 from the rest. I am thinking how much technology has changed things while at the same time it probably has not. Twenty years ago did anyone outside of a team have the capacity to communicate as Steve has? What a wonder. As we watch the world around us change with "social media" we see it happening right here at SDSU. Having made that observation I'm also thiking things probably haven't changed that much as we are still talking about 18-23 year olds who have been getting great advice from we older but wiser folks for years while pretty much ignoring it. Perhaps the access to wisdom is greater but the caacity to ignore it remains about the same. Just some thoughts. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

You guys spend a lot of time declaring what coaches/players should and shouldn't say. It seems to me that this game was sort of like fighting your brother. You both want to win badly and will do whatever it takes to do so. When it's over you still love him, but it really sucks to lose when you wanted it so bad.
The most important thing is that the team moves on and doesn't dwell on the fact that they got their asses kicked. I'm glad they wanted to win so much and then hated losing.
As for the Hoke hugfest, I think it was a necessary closure. Now it's time to move on.
