Relegation is a great mechanism, but it simply won't work in the US. A.) It goes against the traditional mindset of how sports work in this country, B.) television wouldn't buy into the (potential) uncertainty of which teams are in the top division year over year.
Fan confusion + TV confusion = Less $$$

The PAC is more apt to shiiiiit in our drinking water and choke us in the middle of the night, than ever help SDSU. Hell, they like to lord over everyone their academic superiority, even though they know a dogs can get into ASU (My lab is there now) little bastard lied to me about studying hard, but found this on his facebook page. There are literally meth Freaks teaching at WSU. No wonder the little pooch fell asleep, you didn't open his beer and point the ham remote towards the TV! ...

Always a hoot to see these conjecture stories. All explained above but to put it more abruptly, the people who fawn over their pedigrees from USC and Cal think of San Diego State in the same vane they do San Diego City College.

Which, if the Pac-X decides it needs to expand, will quickly be forgotten. May not be much chance of that, but should money move them to invite the Aztecs, you can bet your bottom dollar that you will no longer hear criticism of SDSU's academics. Certainly not from the Pac officials. AzWm

Heres the problem....nobody watches several of those teams that you want to add and therefore they do not bring in equal income. This means teams like Stanford, USC, and other would have to take a pay cut....I mean really, why would a network pay the same money for a school in LA compared to Wyoming? We have high schools in Florida that have higher average attendance then WYoming. THe largest DMA I could find for Wyoming was around 100k compared to LA which is 5 million.
The simple truth is that these schools have nothing in common other then a rough geographic proximity....not the same level of research, ranking, culture or value. Theres just no upside to the Pac12 being a part of this.... the best way for any of the "left out" teams to make money would be to band together and get 1 bid.
If the MAC, Sunbelt, Cusa, and MWC were to get together and make ESPN/Fox/NBC/CBS bid for all their rights in a single contract, they would actually get a better overall offer....mark my words, very soon the top 5 conferences may just do the same thing, while their leaving the NCAA and forming their own Association.
