In 2009, Kyle Blanks started slowly and then really turned it on.
Kyle Blanks 2009 - 22 years old First half of games played (27 games) .188 .288 .344 .631 (2 Home Runs) Rest of games played (27 games) .298 .366 .643 1.008 (8 Home Runs - 6 at home)
Kyle Blanks 2011 - 24 years old .229 .327 .458 .786 Total (17 games) .083 .214 .083 .298 July (10 games) .333 .391 .810 1.201 August (7 games)
It seems it took him less games to get going this time. That makes sense, he is 24 years old now and not a very young 22 like 2009. It is still early but his August results are encouraging. It would be nice if, like some have stated, 2010 is an anomoly because of elbow problems from Spring Training.

Kyle has now played 24 games
First 12 games .094 .194 .094 .288 - "He is a bust".
Second 12 games .386 .438 .727 1.165 - "12 games doesn't mean anything".

now, if he could cut down his swinging through fastballs.
I'm glad that he's coming around. I have to admit, I was this close to giving up on him.

What matters is the result of At Bats not each swing. He does strike out a lot but is hitting well inspite of that. The best part is his age. He is only 24.

I want him to make more contact with fastballs so that he may drive the ball with more consistency. I'm happy with how he's turned things around:)

I like Blanks and have touted him since way back when he was in Elsinore full-time. His strike zone is enormous so he needs to learn to be more selective in swinging at pitches in his power zone. First, I suspect they need to figure out where that is. Reminds me of the SI back in the 60s that had Ted Williams on the cover and it broke down the strike zone into baseball size areas and said what his BA was in each zone. Every batter has a weakness. Most have more than others. For the pitcher, it's throw it to their weaknesses. For the batter it's only swing early in the count where it's their strength.

ESPN has that and displays it in their gamecast when the batter is batting.
I feel a lot better about a new batter when he starts slow and starts to hit than hitting well and then not. The latter may be pitchers adjusting to him rather than him adjusting to the league.

Who would have thought that with Blanks and Guzman.. Rizzo's path to the big leagues looks blocked.

Who would have thought that with Blanks and Guzman.. Rizzo's path to the big leagues looks blocked. Blanks has been looking much better in LF. Rizzo will have to earn the position that many assumed he would merely inherit. September and next spring training should be interesting. Note: Rizzo has not been hitting since his demotion to Tucson. Last 18 games he is hitting .250 with only 2 home runs.

Don't give anything away, no matter production in the minors. It's all about the big leagues and what you do up there.

I guess Blanks has earned himself a starting spot next year in the corner oufield position..
Whats our lineup next year..?
CF Maybin LF Blanks RF Venable?? 1B Guzman? Rizzo? 2B ?? SS Barlett? 3B Headley C Hundley
That offense, unless we have some people break through in MAJOR WAYS.. is still not good enough to compete for the pennant.

Since the All-Star break, the Padres have been scoring plenty of runs, so even with this line-up, I could see much optimism for next year and no reason that the Padres will perform better offensively to start next year. Of course it depends on Hundley staying healthy , Blanks hitting early in the season as well as he hits late in the season, etc

I doubt Guzman is capable of hitting .330 for an enitre season.
