bull$#!+. This forum is the most read and this is big news. Mods should leave this thread here awhile. This is great news, but it really is off topic. I hope AztecMesa members will keep in mind that there are several different sections on this site, each with a specific purpose. WLR

I guess I'm the only conservative here who's glad Obama caught the guy and brought him back dead. Not at all... credit where credit is due. He set this as a priority with Panetta and the CIA, he authorized the operation to go after him, and gave the order to execute the plan. I may disagree with most of his policy positions, but in this instance, he was spot on target (literally, and figuratively). Well done, Mr. President! Now, don't think this is the finish line. Complete the job.

I knew this thread would get moved (as it should have been), but I was giving a little leeway in the short term so we could share the good news with the largest number of people possible.
It's now in the appropriate forum.

I guess I'm the only conservative here who's glad Obama caught the guy and brought him back dead. To be clear, Obama gets the credit for it happening on his watch, not for getting him. The credit goes to those who figured it out, worked up the number 6, and executed the plan. It is a great day, this had to happen and I am glad he took a head shot rather than be paraded around and becoming every thug's trade material. We still have a lot of work to do, as this doesn't solve the problem.

Navy Seals. Twenty of them in two helicopters apparently. God bless 'em. And may that mass murdering son of a bitch Osama bin Laden burn in hell! Probably trained right here in San Diego. ST6, East Coast, Virginia. Some no doubt had been in Coronado at one point.

Likely ST6, they were the original SEAL counterterrorist unit, started around 1980. They are probably still home based back east. Their first CO was a guy named Rich Marcinko. All would have gone thru SEAL basic here in Coronado.

Barack Obama took a risk when he okayed this operation. If it had gone bad, and there were a number of ways in which it could have, he would have been blamed. I give him credit for taking that risk.
For comparison, remember (or research) the fiasco that resulted when Operation Eagle Claw, authorized by Pres. Carter to rescue the U.S. personnel held hostage by the Iranians in 1979, failed. A similar failure in this operation would have been another blow to Obama's slumping prestige.

They had said that they got a really good tip from a detainee in Guantanamo Bay. I'm sure he was a suspected terrorist. I believe that this was the crucial lead, as well as the tip from Bin Laden's trusted courier.

I can't be sure but it looks like some of the property where the Navy used to run SERE training out there in Warner Springs during the 70's. Used to be a requirement for all Navy pilots.

It's too bad they couldn't have shot him in the nuts, brought him back here (still alive), taken him up to the top floor of the Sears Tower and given him the choice of burning to death or jumping.

I hope AztecMesa members will keep in mind that there are several different sections on this site, each with a specific purpose. WLR It should have stayed on the main board through the night, until it became common knowledge. The off topic board has about 3500 posts, the main board 172,000. Many more potential viewers on the main board. Make sense? I only learned of this because a friend phoned me with the news. Not everyone is glued to network TV. This news trumped your topic classification rules.

AzWm I give major props to Obama for approving the Kill Order instead of just capturing bin Laden (think of the nightmare it would have been if bin Laden had been captured). Also, props to Obama for approving a risky Navy SEAL operation, instead of the safer option of bombing the complex - which would have lead to inconclusive results and speculation. BTW, the opinions above are from a person who did not vote for Obama.
