I'm nervous about this one. Eastlake is still a very good team while Vista had to replace 18 of 22 starters from last year. All the predictions are in favor of Eastlake at this point...

Will Eastlake have any of the injured players back for Thursday's game?
Eastlake played very well until the players suffered injuries.

Vista High pulled off an upset against Eastlake, 23-21, to earn the right to play for the Div I championship for an impressive third year in a row.
The Panthers lead 10-7 at half time and matched the Titans, 13-13 in the second half. The game swung back and forth all night (though Eastlake never lead). The issue was not decided until Fabian Santa Cruz put a big tackle on the Titan's QB very late in the game. The tackle caused a fumble that was recovered by Vista. Vista completed no passes in the first half but completed something like 6 out of 7 in the second half. Also important was the clutch running of Devin Hickey. Hickey had missed several games with an injury and seemed somewhat rusty early in the game. He really got going in the second half with at least 60 yards gained then, mostly in short to medium runs that came at important moments in the contest.
The Panthers lost star RB Jacob Bedford who went down after only three carries. Lineman Patrick Johnson was also hurt. Their participation in Monday's championship game is not clear at this time.
RB Tavarus Green was a major force for the Titan's, but they came up just a bit short and finished their season with an 8-4 record (their best win was the opening beating of mighty Helix!). Vista, which has won 7 of their last 8 games, now stands at 7-5.

Vista - from 0-4 to Qualcomm. Are you kidding me? That's coaching. Three years in a row to Qualcomm. That's coaching.
Vista hasn't had the biggest or the fastest or the strongest team anytime in the last decade. They're always playing teams in the playoffs with bigger, stronger linemen, and faster skill players. And yet Vista keeps finding ways to win. That's coaching.
John Carroll has had an amazing run, and he's a great coach, but he's also been blessed with amazing physical specimens on his roster. He's had some huge, but athletic, linemen, and some great linebackers and still position players. Until this year he's simply had the more talented team than his opponents.
But also in the discussion of best coach in the county you've got to include Vista's Dan Williams. He's consistently done more with less. And this year he's had to take TRIPLE duty as HC, OC, and DC. And Vista had to replace 18 of last year's starters. 18. Dan Williams is easily the coach of the year.

I didn't mean this season, I meant over the past 10 years.
Re: John Carroll - I didn't mean this season, I meant over the past 10 years.
I get that, but he has had the most talented team in the county during that time as well.
I just wonder how he'd do with a team like the one Vista has this year - they're not big, they're not fast, they're not strong. They just play hard and are coached extremely well. Could Carroll have gotten a team like that to the Q? He never has...
I'm just saying that while he is a great coach you can't downplay the value of the talent (size, speed, strength, athletic ability) of the players he has consistently had on his team.

With over 3100 enrollment, he ought to have those players. O'side has 2300+.
Big schools, with big Pop Warner feeders, and big booster groups have an advantage. And, yes, your coach has done a fine job.

Vista doesn't have big players. They haven't had big players for years. Vista used to have a large Samoan contingent on the roster. Not anymore. All those players are now going to Oceanside. Those families always lived on the Vista/Oceanside border, but they were in the area served by VHS. Something changed over the last 10-12 years and they're not going to Vista anymore.
Vista is also a dirt poor school district. They had to start laying off teachers 2 years before the economy collapsed. There is little funding at Vista compared to a school like Oceanside. (We could only dream of a nice new stadium & press box like they have in Oceanside.)
Don't get me wrong - Carroll is a damned good coach. He's just never had to deal with a weak or even average roster. Williams has. Right now, for example. This roster is made up of small-ish guys, none of whom have the speed of Oceanside's skill players.
