So, why do Australia and New Zealand with low background radiation readings have fairly high cancer rates? The answer, of course, is skin cancer.
Australians have highest rate of skin cancer: Study
![[image] [image]](http://www.thestarphoenix.com/OPINION/3986823.bin) Two swimmers stand at the water's edge at Sydney's Bondi Beach in a file photo. Melanoma -- the most virulent form of skin cancer -- is caused by harmful ultraviolet light from the sun.
Australia's sun worshipping culture means the country's 22 million people are 13 times more likely to develop skin cancer than the global average, according to a new study released Thursday.
The "Cancer in Australia 2010" report compiled by a government agency revealed that the sun-drenched and beach-loving nation has the globe's highest rate of deadly melanoma and one of the highest overall rates of cancer.
Melanoma -- the most virulent form of skin cancer -- is caused by harmful ultraviolet light from the sun.
Australia's proximity to Antarctica, where there is a hole in the ozone layer that filters out UV rays, also increases the risk.
However, higher rates of detection and tracking also explain the number of cases of cancer diagnosed each year, according to lead researcher Christine Sturrock from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
"The fact we are very good at tracking cancers goes some way to explaining this, as most other countries are not as good," Sturrock told AFP.

Notice that most of the countries are in the northern hemisphere. If fact if you dropped skin cancer from the list, all of the countries would be in the northern hemisphere where the background radiation is so high. Cancer is caused by a multitude of things.
Radiation, Viruses, and harsh chemical exposure are the main causes. Most people have enough common sense to avoid harsh chemicals. Viruses can be limited by modern medicine. Radiation comes at you from background exposure, medical exposure and abnormal exposure. An example of abnormal exposure would be breathing radioactive particulate from Fukushima. An estimated ten million people will die from cancer caused by the continuing Fukushima Radiation release. They have not been able to stop it, so it just keeps polluting the Earth.
