This is good for SDSU. USU and SJSU leaving for the MWC along with UTSA to CUSA makes the WAC's continued existence even more tenuous and increases the chances that the Big West can pick up some leftovers like Boise, NMSU, which has a good hoops program, and Seattle and Denver, which have great venues and are located in big cities. Or if the BWC refuses, it increases the chances for SDSU and Boise to create a new conference composed of such schools themselves.
Wouldn't this create the problem of ZERO autobids for several years? God forbid the negative nellies on here if we aren't even in a ONE bid conference.
I understand that was TIC but I'll add that we're going to be so good we won't need to worry about not getting an at-large bid during the first five years until the new conference gains an autobid.
Here's a thought, too.
If the dominoes fall as it appears they will, the WAC is going to be desperate to stay in existence. So I can see the WAC being as desirous of adding us for hoops as the BE was of adding Boise for football. If so, we could have the same leverage as Boise did and demand a partner come along.
Who? My first thought is Long Beach, but rumor has it Dan Monson didn't want us in the BWC because he's hoping to turn his school into the BWC version of Gonzaga. So how 'bout Fullerton? It's close to a busy airport so as to facilitate travel for the rest ot the WAC and its baseball team is as good as any on the west coast and, like hoops, playing the toughest possible schedule is advantageous in that conference.
Did the MWC change their policy on allowing non-football members? I don't think that's an option for BYU. They'll probably keep non-football sports in WCC and find a few more schools to schedule in football. Probably means playing more road games then they'd like.
..Sent from my HTC Evo..
I'm not sure that BYU could get someone to play them, even on the road. Last year, they had 2 "bye" weeks during the month of November. This year they have 1 scheduled (Nov 3), but the last 3 games of the year are against the WAC opponents (Idaho, @SJSU, @NMSU).
If their WAC arrangement falls apart, I'm not sure that they would be able to find someone to fill in that schedule. Most teams enjoy taking a week off in the middle of their conference season.
MWC will go to at least 12 if not 16. Sounds like UTEP is moving from CUSA to MWC.
Where did you get that? C-USA added UTSA and NTU (to add to Rice) to maintain the heavy Texas focus that UTEP wants. Their alumni in San Antonio, greater Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston still get to see their Miners and UTEP also retains a strong Texas presence for recruiting. UTEP is, apparently, now staying on the C-USA side.

Its been discussed for some time now - especially when the two conferences were going to merge. Still seems to be in play.
"On the other side I think UTEP will probably go to the Mountain West," Johnson said. "That's really where they should be geographically."

I suspect BYU may now be in more trouble than it will admit. We can conclude from the SL Trib article that the WAC is beginning its last chapter as a football conference. The only ready replacement for BYU’s scheduling alliance with the WAC would be one with the MWC. But despite the image boost the MWC would regain by reconnecting with the Cougars, the 10-member conference can survive without them. With no WAC, BYU will actually need the MWC more than the other way around.
Hard feelings in the MWC would probably mean BYU’s phone calls to Thompson wouldn’t get returned unless BYU asked for full readmission, which their pride will never allow them to do. So BYU can continue to fill those November dates with single games against WAC orphans and whoever else is desperate for a payday on the road. How long will that continue to excite ESPN?
BYU turned down a Big East invite last fall. Seems doubtful they would refuse a second chance.

Excellent post.
It hadn't occurred to me how much the WAC going out of the football biz could hurt the YBU but it certainly could. There's been scuttlebutt the last couple weeks that the Borg is again speaking with the BE and that could be the main reason.
Sucks, doesn't it? We finally rid ourselves of those guys but they might just follow us to our new home. Lemmings.
1. UNLV 2. New Mexico 3. Colorado St. 4. Air Force 5. Wyoming
(New teams ****)
6. Fresno St. 7. Nevada 8. Hawaii 9. San Jose St. 10. Utah St.
Would the Aztecs benefit from staying????
Nope!! well maybe in basketball
Acutally, for me, this is a much more desirable lineup. I will enjoy it.
I appreciate State will benefit from up to as much as 8 million dollars moving to the BE. With those big bucks they'll be able to build a new stadium, or repave a parking lot or remodel Love or give the admins a raise? Whatever they do, none of it's coming to me yet I'm sure the cost of doing business with State will increase. Whatever.
The Arlington Star-Telegram noted UT-San Antonio will be joining Conference-USA instead of the WAC and "ahead of a planned merger with the MWC".
It just gets better and better for us little guys..

Gotta love this!
Lets just "Pray" the Disingenuous Borg are NOT afforded another opportunity to get into the Big East.

Devil's advocate or misunderstanding?
Ex. - How many bids would the MWC have gotten this year without an auto-bid?

I hope the Aztecs stay in the MWC. It is a conference in which the Aztecs can win championships and renew or retain our traditional rivalries with Fresno, San Jose, UNLV ect.

No thanks - the MWC is the new WAC (literally) and we saw what happend to them. They're last TV contact was 1M for the entire conference!!!
