Western Big East « Thread Started on Apr 29, 2012, 9:54am »
From an Aztec and, even, Bronco perspective SDSU and BSU are the only "real" western schools in the Big East and are rather isolated. From a traditional Big East perspective everything west of the Appalachians is "western". They believe that SMU, Houston, Cincinnati, Louisville and SDSU/ BSU give them a legitimate "western" division. What are your thoughts on that? Will the Big East expand in the "real" west by adding AFA, Fresno, UNLV, UNM, or ? Realignment is so crazy that no one can, with any degree of certainty, predict the future but what are your best thoughts?

Jim Sterk has said that another "Western" school will be added. When, who knows. Will they go beyond 14? Who knows. What team(s) will it be? Probably in order of preference - BYU, Air Force and Fresno State.
That this subject has been rehashed, and this thread is not necessary
You are assuming that realignment is finished. It is ongoing and changes daily. What was true a week ago is now old news. There is still, IMO, a lot of movement to occur.

I hope you guys are joking. Cincy, SDSU, Rutgers, Memphis, SMU, Houston and Navy are some of the worst Football programs over the last 20+ years. UNLV would fit right in! Get real or get lost!

I believe that the BE will be a stepping stone for the Aztecs...if we can show that we can play in a BCS (or former BCS) league then we prove to the NCAA football world that we are a legitimate program and not the doormat of a 2nd tier conference (as we were up until two years ago)...
If we are successful competing in the BE and we grow our attendance (to around 40-45K / game) then we would be a strong candidate to join the Pac12 or the Big12...
This would solve our BW basketball problem as well...
...but that won't ever happen if we flounder in the BE and our attendance stays around 20K...

Hey RR what's the latest on the new football stadium? I haven't seen anything in the RJ since that big article months ago. Maybe now that Adelson is through wasting money on the Newtster he can cough up a few bucks to get you guys a decent place to play. Treat your football team like the hoops guys and you may have a chance someday.

Lost in all this talk is whether the WAC remains solvent. Remember, Boise needs a place to park their Oly sports. If they can't they will be forced to stay because I don't think the BW will expand out of CA(Hawaii excluded) due to costs. Therefore SDSU cannot remain as the lone wolf in the BE-West. The BE wouldn't be adverse to dropping us too since they now have more than enough members playing football and BE basketball.

First, while I believe the WAC is dead as a football conference, it should survive in Oly sports which can meet BSU's needs. In a worse case scenario, BSU can return its Oly sports to the Big Sky. The Big Sky is a Division 1 conference in Oly sports. I don't see a big enough crisis that would force BSU (or SDSU) back to the MWC. However, it looks like the MWC is holding two spots open "just in case".

It's my understanding that the Big Sky won't allow Boise to split their sports.
