An interesting bit of trivia from Wikipedia-------"the tradition of cutting down the net is credited to Everett Case, coach of NCS who stood on his players shoulders to accomplish the feat after the Wolfpack won the Southern Conference tournament in 1947."

Case was a great high school basketball coach in Indiana and I think he brought that tradition with him to NCSU. So he brought the tradition to college basketball, but not basketball in general (fairly confident that's correct.). He also brought the "tradition" of player introductions before tip-off.
